2018 General Assembly Session impacting School Nursing

The VASN Legislative Committee is happy to inform you that three bills have been introduced for the 2018 General Assembly session that would have an impact on school nurse staffing in Virginia.  The main language affecting school nurses in each of these bills reads: “Local school boards shall employ at least one full-time equivalent school nurse position in each elementary school, middle school, and high school in the local school division or at least one full-time equivalent school nurse position per 550 students in grades kindergarten through 12.”

Members of the VASN Legislative Committee and others have worked with legislators to ensure that this proposed legislation will remain a part of the discussion for this year’s General Assembly session.  VASN supports these bills and we ask that you express your support in the following ways:

  • If you know a parent or a student with availability to speak on behalf of school nurses during the 2018 General Assembly session in Richmond (possibly with little notice), please obtain permission to share their contact information with Becky Bowers-Lanier (becky@b2lconsulting.com).
  • Take the time to familiarize yourself with the VASN 2018 Policy Priorities document.  This document will provide you with talking points related to the above bills.  The document is designed to be ‘left behind’ with your legislator after any conversations you may have.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Take Care,
