VASN SOQ Position Statement

This is a very exciting time to be a school nurse in Virginia! I am grateful for those of you who have been passionate advocates for school nursing services in the Commonwealth. Your voices have been heard, and the BOE is currently considering a proposal to add School Nursing Services into the Standards of Quality at a ratio of one nurse to every 550 students for the first time. It would be a historic step forward in providing professional school nursing care for our students and families.

Our goal ultimately is to have at least one school nurse in every building, every day, based on the needs of each individual school community. That is an admittedly ambitious goal which we can and should continue to advocate for most effectively at the local level. The VASN Legislative Committee met on several occasions via phone conference to draft an official statement in response to this initiative. Members of the VASN Executive Board helped to create the final document that is attached. It has been voted on and approved by the VASN Executive Board and submitted to Melissa Duchau, Director for Board Relations at the Virginia Department of Education.

Please review the attached position statement and send your own comments of support to by Wednesday, October 26th for inclusion in the BOE’s discussion prior to their vote on the proposal next Wednesday. Thank you for all you do to promote school nursing services in Virginia and provide superior professional care to our students.

Best Regards,
