Each year at our annual conference in November, the Virginia Association of School Nurses recognizes outstanding members of Virginia’s school nursing community with Excellence Awards in School Nursing in several categories:
- School Nurse of the Year
- Outstanding Private, Independent, or Parochial School Nurse
- School Nurse Administrator of the Year
The National Association of School Nursing (NASN) defines school nursing as a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
We believe acknowledging Virginia’s most outstanding school nurses and school nurse administrators is important because they exemplify and advance the clear correlation between health and students’ academic achievement. School nurses across the Commonwealth of Virginia engage in professional nursing practice, use the nursing process for decision-making, document the services that are provided, and assure confidentiality. As professional nurses, they address the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of their students. In addition, they demonstrate the support of student success in the learning process as the ultimate outcome of practice.
