Student Mental Health & Well-Being

Supporting the emotional, psychological, and social well-being of Virginia students

Mental health is an essential part of a student's overall health and includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental health can influence how students learn, build relationships, cope with challenges, make decisions, and engage at home, at school, and in their communities.

The Virginia Association of School Nurses (VASN) believes every student deserves to learn in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment with access to appropriate mental and behavioral health support when it is needed.

School Nurses Support the Whole Student

School nurses are often a trusted and accessible point of contact for students experiencing physical, emotional, or behavioral health concerns. Through assessment, education, collaboration, advocacy, and referral, school nurses can help recognize concerns and connect students and families with appropriate school, health care, and community supports.

When a Student May Need Additional Support

● Anxiety, stress, or depression
● Grief and loss
● Changes in mood or behavior
● Bullying or peer concerns
● Eating disorders or disordered eating
● Self-harm or thoughts of suicide
● Substance use
● Trauma or sexual violence
● Other emotional, behavioral, or mental health concerns

Students and families do not have to navigate these concerns alone.

Finding Help & Support

Early recognition and access to appropriate support can make an important difference. Families who are concerned about a student's mental or behavioral health can reach out to their school nurse, school mental health professional, primary care provider, or another trusted health care professional for guidance and assistance connecting with services.

Support may be available through school-based services, health care providers, community organizations, and behavioral health professionals throughout Virginia.
